Humberstone lies on the eastern side of Leicester in the English Midlands. It began as a separate village, and its old centre is still recognisable on the map as a knot of irregular streets. Around it, twentieth-century housing spreads in curving crescents and cul-de-sacs, the suburban pattern that absorbed the village into the growing city.
The area includes Humberstone Garden Suburb, an early twentieth-century development built by a co-operative society on garden city principles. Its gently curving roads and generous plots stand out from the terraced grids closer to the city centre. The contrast between these planned streets and the older lanes gives the neighbourhood a layered look from above.
To the west the streets tighten toward central Leicester, while to the east the city soon gives way to open country.
