Kasamatsu is a small town in Gifu Prefecture, on the north bank of the Kiso River, which here forms the boundary with Aichi. From above it is dense and low, with narrow lanes, rail lines and residential blocks packed onto flat ground. The wide river, with its embankments and sandbars, runs along its southern edge.
The town developed as a river port, and during the Edo period it served as a regional administrative centre. That history lingers in the older streets near the water. Meitetsu rail lines link Kasamatsu to Gifu and Nagoya, placing it firmly within the dense commuter belt of the Nobi Plain.
A Kasamatsu map poster captures a very Japanese kind of density: a fine-grained street pattern, the thread of the railway and the broad, calm band of the Kiso across the bottom of the frame. The lanes closest to the river are among the oldest in Kasamatsu, a reminder of its days as a river port. Their tight, irregular pattern contrasts with the open water.
Rail lines
Meitetsu tracks cross the town and meet at its station, drawing clean lines through the dense residential fabric and tying Kasamatsu to Gifu and Nagoya.
