Kosti lies in central Sudan on the western bank of the White Nile, in wide, flat country where the river is the main feature for many kilometres. The map is simple and strong: a broad band of water on one side, and a town of low, regular blocks spreading away from it across level ground.
The town grew in the early twentieth century and is often said to take its name from a Greek trader who settled here. It became an important junction where the railway crosses the White Nile and where river boats traditionally set off southwards, making Kosti a link between northern and southern Sudan and, later, South Sudan.
Bridges carry road and rail across the river towards Rabak on the eastern bank, drawing clear straight lines over the water.
