Messina sits on the northeastern corner of Sicily, facing the Italian mainland across the narrow Strait of Messina. Its most distinctive feature is the harbour, enclosed by a curved spit of land whose sickle shape gave the ancient city its Greek name, Zancle. Behind the waterfront, the city spreads along a thin coastal plain, with the Peloritani mountains rising steeply behind it.
Much of what appears on the map today is a reconstruction. The earthquake and tsunami of 1908 destroyed most of the city and killed a large part of its population. Messina was rebuilt on a regular grid of wide streets with low buildings, designed to withstand future tremors. Ferries still cross constantly to Villa San Giovanni in Calabria, a few kilometres away.
A Messina map poster brings these elements together in a single frame: the hooked peninsula of the harbour, the orderly blocks of the rebuilt centre, the long coastal road running north toward Capo Peloro and the lagoons of Ganzirri and Faro, and the gullies descending from the hills. It is a city defined by the water in front of it.
