Naldurg is a town in the Dharashiv (formerly Osmanabad) district of Maharashtra, on the dry uplands of the Deccan plateau. From above it looks like a compact settlement next to the Bori river, with lanes gathered on one side of the water and open farmland stretching out on every other side.
The town is best known for Naldurg Fort, one of the larger forts in the region, whose long, irregular walls follow the shape of the ground above the river. A dam built across the Bori joins the fort's two parts, and when the river is high, water spills over it next to the structure known as the Pani Mahal, the water palace.
A Naldurg map poster captures a place where fortification and river still make up most of the plan. The fort's jagged outline, the dam across the water and the smaller street pattern of the town together form an unusual composition, more like a historic site plan than a typical town map.

Dam and Pani Mahal
A masonry dam spans the Bori and joins the two parts of the fort. The Pani Mahal sits within it, and in the monsoon the river runs over the dam beside it.
