Polyarnyy Map Poster & Print
Polyarnyy lies on the western shore of the Kola Bay, the long fjord that runs from the Barents Sea down to Murmansk. The coast here is rocky and cut into coves, and the town fits into one of the most sheltered of them. From above, the streets curve around the water's edge and climb onto the rocky ground behind. Beyond them lies open tundra-like terrain dotted with small lakes.
The town was founded at the end of the nineteenth century as Aleksandrovsk, a port on the Murman coast, and was renamed Polyarnyy in the 1930s. It became one of the first bases of the Soviet Northern Fleet and remains a closed naval town. It lies well north of the Arctic Circle and has weeks of polar night each winter.
A Polyarnyy map poster is mostly about the coastline. The edge of the fjord, the harbour inlet and the scattered lakes do most of the work, and the town's compact street pattern sits between rock and water. In black and white, the far-northern setting comes across clearly.

The town wraps around a deep inlet protected from the open sea. This natural harbour is the reason a port was founded here, and it sits at the centre of the composition.
Lakes of the hinterland
Inland, small lakes and ponds are scattered across the rocky ground. They appear as a loose scatter of rounded shapes that fill the empty northern landscape.
