Rotherham is in South Yorkshire, where the River Rother joins the River Don, just northeast of Sheffield. The town centre sits on rising ground above the meeting of the two rivers, with streets closely packed around Rotherham Minster. From there, terraced suburbs spread over the valley sides, and the flat valley floor is taken up by railways, canal and the long outlines of industrial sites.
Across the Don stands the Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge, one of only a few medieval bridge chapels left in England. Downstream, the old Templeborough steelworks has become the Magna science centre, and its huge shed is still a clear rectangle on the map. The M1 and M18 motorways pass close to the town, and their junctions curve over the hills to the west and south.
