Rybinsk Map Poster & Print
Rybinsk lies on the upper Volga where the Sheksna joins it, just below the dam that holds back the Rybinsk Reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. The reservoir was filled in the 1940s, flooding towns and villages to create a vast inland sea. On a map the dam and the start of the reservoir sit at the city's north-western edge, with the Volga flowing on through town.
In the nineteenth century Rybinsk was a major transfer point for grain moving along the Volga, and the historic centre still faces the river. Its streets follow a regular plan introduced in the late eighteenth century, with the Transfiguration Cathedral and the columned grain exchange standing prominently on the embankment. Beyond the centre, residential districts spread along both banks.
The city also has a long industrial tradition, above all in aircraft engine manufacturing. A Rybinsk map poster combines the broad sweep of the Volga with the straight streets of the merchant town, and the great reservoir to the north-west adds a large open plane that gives the whole composition room to breathe.

Volga embankment
The river runs through the city with the historic centre on its bank, where the cathedral and grain exchange once faced a constant stream of barges.
Regular merchant grid
The eighteenth-century plan gives the old town straight, evenly spaced streets, a tidy pattern that contrasts with the broad curves of the river.
