Schwetzingen lies on the flat Upper Rhine Plain between Mannheim and Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg. On a map one feature outweighs everything else: the palace and its enormous garden, which take up a large share of the town's western side. The palace faces a square that opens onto the older streets. The gardens stretch away behind it in geometric lines, then give way to looser, winding paths.
The palace was the summer residence of the Electors Palatine, and under Elector Carl Theodor in the eighteenth century the gardens grew into one of the best known in Europe. They combine a formal French layout with an English landscape garden and include a garden mosque. The young Mozart visited the court here. Today the town is also known as a centre of asparagus growing and hosts an annual music festival.

A long straight axis runs from the palace through the gardens toward the west. It sets the direction of the whole layout and ties the town to the surrounding plain.
