Widnes faces Runcorn across the Mersey at the point where the estuary narrows to a gap, so the river is the most striking shape on the map. Two long crossings bridge that gap: the arched Silver Jubilee Bridge and the newer Mersey Gateway, a cable-stayed bridge that opened in 2017 a short distance upstream.
The town grew in the nineteenth century as a centre of the chemical industry, and Spike Island by the riverside, where the St Helens Canal meets the Mersey, is often called its birthplace. Today the old docks and canal locks lie within green space, and residential terraces and later estates spread north from the river.
A Widnes map poster brings together the curve of the estuary, the lines of two bridges, the canal and the rail lines that once served the works. There is also a well-known story that Paul Simon wrote Homeward Bound while waiting at Widnes railway station, a pleasant detail for a print of the town.
