Wokingham is a market town in Berkshire, a few miles south-east of Reading. Its historic core is small and easy to read on a map: a market place with the town hall at its centre, and a handful of old streets leading away from it in different directions. Around this core the town has expanded steadily, especially in recent decades.
The outer map is a patchwork of residential estates, many built around curving roads and cul-de-sacs, interspersed with parks, playing fields and pockets of woodland. The Emm Brook runs through the western side of the town, and railway lines toward Reading, Guildford and London cross near the station, giving the town a clear set of dividing lines.
