Ala-Buka is the centre of a district in Jalal-Abad Region, in western Kyrgyzstan close to the border with Uzbekistan. It sits on the northwestern rim of the Fergana Valley, where flat irrigated land begins to rise towards the mountains. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by orchards, gardens and fields.
Irrigation defines the landscape here. Canals and ditches run across the valley floor, feeding the plots that surround the town, and roads follow them in long straight lines. To the north the terrain climbs into foothills of the Chatkal range, and the map changes texture as regular farmland gives way to folded, empty slopes.
Houses in the region typically stand in walled courtyards with gardens, so from above the residential blocks read as solid, closely packed shapes.
