Canal junction
Several canals meet in and around the town. Their straight lines and harbours are the clearest features of the map and a reminder of the industrial past.

Mapa
Almelo Map Poster & Print
Almelo lies in Twente, the eastern part of the Dutch province of Overijssel. On the map, it is shaped by water. Several canals meet here, including a branch of the Twentekanaal and the canal toward Nordhorn across the German border. They cut straight lines through the town and its industrial areas.
The old town is compact, with a small market area and streets leading outward. Right next to it, the grounds of Huis Almelo, the estate of the town's former lords, keep a large area of woods and lanes free of building. Around them spread residential districts from different decades, each with its own street pattern, and finally the farmland of Twente.
Almelo grew as a centre of the Twente textile industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Traces of the mills and their canals can still be seen in the town layout. An Almelo map poster shows a Dutch town where water, industry and an old estate still shape the plan.

Huis Almelo estate
The wooded grounds of the old manor lie right beside the centre. They create a large green space that shows up as open land on the map.
Layered districts
Neighbourhoods from different eras surround the old town. Each has its own street pattern, from tight rows to looser, curving plans.
