Mapa
Harpenden Map Poster & Print
Harpenden grew along the old road through the Lea valley in Hertfordshire, and its long high street is still the backbone of the map. Shops and houses line the road for a good distance before the town widens into leafy residential streets on either side. The railway line to London runs down the eastern side, and the station is a large part of why the town expanded as a commuter settlement.
Open space is one of the defining features. Harpenden Common stretches south from the centre as a broad area of grass and woodland. It leaves a large, irregular gap in the street pattern that most towns of this size would have built over. To the west lie the fields of Rothamsted Research, founded in 1843 and among the oldest agricultural research stations in the world.
A Harpenden map poster shows a town that is surprisingly green from above. A clear linear centre meets large open greens, curving Victorian and interwar streets and the straight line of the railway. It is a quiet and well-ordered composition that suits the place, and residents will find plenty in it to recognise.

Harpenden Common
A large area of open common and woodland stretches south of the centre. It leaves a wide, irregular blank space within the built-up area.
Rothamsted fields
West of town, the experimental fields of Rothamsted Research form a large expanse of open land. This station has studied crops since the nineteenth century.
