Usta Muhammad lies on the flat alluvial plains of eastern Balochistan, close to the border with Sindh. The land here is low and level, and from above it is shaped mainly by water brought in from the Indus system. Irrigation canals and field boundaries form long straight lines across the countryside. The town itself is a compact cluster of streets where roads from the surrounding farmland meet.
The area is agricultural, and canal irrigation makes crops such as rice possible in what would otherwise be a very hot, dry plain. That relationship between water and land is easy to see on a map. The Usta Muhammad map poster shows a settlement surrounded by geometry, where engineered channels divide the plain into ordered strips.
