Delft is one of the clearest examples of a historic Dutch town plan. From above, the old centre forms a compact, elongated shape wrapped in a ring of water that follows the line of the former town walls. Inside, long parallel canals such as the Oude Delft run north to south, crossed by short streets and many small bridges, with the large Markt square at the heart.
The Markt sits between the Nieuwe Kerk, where William of Orange is buried, and the Renaissance city hall. The Oude Kerk's tower, a short walk away, leans noticeably. Johannes Vermeer lived and painted here, and the town gave its name to Delft Blue earthenware. South of the centre, the Delft University of Technology campus takes up a large district of its own.
A Delft map poster captures the town's finely drawn pattern: the moat enclosing the centre, the straight canals inside it and the Schie waterway running past toward Rotterdam. Outside the old core, the railway, later neighbourhoods and the broad university grounds show how the town expanded while keeping its medieval layout intact.
