Fécamp lies on the Alabaster Coast of Normandy, where a valley cuts through the high chalk cliffs to the sea. From above, the town fills the valley floor, with the harbour and its basins extending inland from the channel. The streets climb the slopes on both sides, and the cliff edge runs away to the north and south in long straight lines.
The town has long been a fishing port, historically associated with cod fishing off Newfoundland. The Abbey of the Holy Trinity was a major pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Fécamp is also home to the Palais Bénédictine, where the Bénédictine liqueur is produced. Cap Fagnet, above the harbour, offers a view along the cliffs.
