Gamboru lies in Borno State, in the far north-east of Nigeria, directly on the border with Cameroon. The Cameroonian town of Fotokol stands across a river, and together the two form a crossing point between the countries. The surrounding land is flat and open, part of the wide Lake Chad basin, and seasonal waterways shape the terrain.
From above, the town is compact, with its streets gathered close together near the river and the border crossing. Roads lead west into Nigeria and east into Cameroon, while the plains around appear as broad, lightly marked spaces with scattered settlements.
