Hede is the seat of Sheyang County in the city of Yancheng, Jiangsu. The county lies on the broad coastal plain of northern Jiangsu, land that has been gradually built up and reclaimed near the Yellow Sea. On the map, this flatness is the defining feature: roads run long and straight, and the town expands in large, orderly blocks with few natural obstacles to bend them.
Rivers and man-made channels cross the plain, most of them running towards the coast. Around the town they divide the farmland into long, narrow strips, and their parallel lines give the landscape a combed, almost textile look when seen from above.
