Mining-era quarters
Neighbourhoods built for miners' families appear as planned streets with a regular rhythm, clearly different from the older ribbon development along the main roads.

El mapa
Houthalen Map Poster & Print
Houthalen forms the southern part of the Belgian municipality of Houthalen-Helchteren, in the province of Limburg. On a map, the centre stretches along a main road, with residential streets branching off in both directions and large areas of woodland and heath pressing close on the east. Motorway and main road connections cross the area.
The town's modern shape owes a lot to coal. The Houthalen mine operated for much of the twentieth century and brought workers and their families from Belgium and abroad, with garden-city neighbourhoods built for them. Since closing in 1992, the former mine site has been partly reused, and the surrounding landscape has become a recreation area.
A Houthalen map poster brings together the ordered mining quarters, the long commercial street and the wide green spaces around them. The woods and heath read as calm open areas, while the residential streets create a dense but relaxed pattern. It is a portrait of a Kempen town shaped by work and landscape.

Kempen woodland
Pine forest and heath surround the east of the town, leaving large unbuilt spaces that frame the street network and give the map room to breathe.
