Leek Map Poster & Print
Leek is a market town in the Staffordshire Moorlands, often called the Queen of the Moorlands. It sits on high ground above the valley of the River Churnet, and the map shows it clearly. The old centre, around the market place, occupies the top of the rise, and streets fall away on every side toward the river and the surrounding farmland.
Leek grew wealthy on silk in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the mills and terraced housing from that period still shape its street plan. Rows of tight terraces fill the slopes around the centre. Larger industrial plots sit lower down, closer to the water. A branch of the Caldon Canal once reached the town, and traces of it still appear in the lines of the valley.
A Leek map poster shows a classic English market town: one central square, roads leaving in all directions toward Macclesfield, Buxton, Ashbourne and Stoke, and dense Victorian streets filling the space between them. To the north the land rises toward the gritstone edges of the Roaches, which marks the start of the Peak District.
