Lommel is in the province of Limburg in north-eastern Belgium, in the Kempen, a region of sandy soil, heathland and pine forest. On the map, the town centre is a compact cluster, and long straight roads lead outward across a flat landscape broken by blocks of woodland and the line of the canal.
Canals cross the territory, including the Bocholt-Herentals canal, drawn as ruler-straight lines that contrast with the loops of residential streets. Industrial zones sit along the water, many of them linked to the fine white sand for which the area is known and which is used in glass making.
Lommel is also home to the largest German military cemetery in Belgium and to the Lommel Sahara, an unusual expanse of open sand and water on the edge of town. A Lommel map poster captures this blend of order and openness, with forest, water and sand appearing as distinct, carefully balanced areas.
