Nürtingen lies on the Neckar southeast of Stuttgart, in the Esslingen district. The river runs through the valley floor, and the historic centre climbs the slope above it, with streets rising toward the town church of St. Laurentius. On a map, the old town is a compact cluster on the hill, while newer districts and industrial areas spread along the valley and up the surrounding heights.
The poet Friedrich Hölderlin spent his childhood in Nürtingen, and the town still honours that connection. Today it is also a university town, home to a university of applied sciences focused on economics, environment and agriculture. Its location at the foot of the Swabian Alb, with the Neckar valley opening toward Stuttgart, has long made it a natural regional centre.
