Pīrgaaj sits in Rangpur Division, in the far north of Bangladesh, where the land is almost perfectly level and the horizon is ruled by fields. From above, the town shows as a compact knot of streets around its market and administrative core. The streets are short and irregular, and they loosen quickly into lanes that run out between paddies and homesteads.
This part of the country is shaped by water. It is flat alluvial ground crossed by small rivers, channels and ponds that fill and shrink with the monsoon.
