Pottstown sits on the north bank of the Schuylkill River in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The town was laid out in the mid-1700s with a regular grid, and that plan is still easy to see: High Street runs east–west through the centre, and numbered and named streets cross it at right angles, climbing gently away from the river.
The borough is named after John Potts, an ironmaster whose family ran forges in the area, and iron and steel shaped the town for generations. Pottsgrove Manor, the Potts family home, still stands. Manatawny Creek joins the Schuylkill on the western side, and The Hill School occupies a large campus on the east.
A Pottstown map poster shows a textbook colonial grid bent only by water: the river edge along the south, the creek to the west, and railway lines following the valley. In black and white, the ordered blocks and the curving river create a well-balanced composition.
