Sonthofen lies in the Oberallgäu district of Bavaria, in the wide valley of the Iller, where the Ostrach joins it from the east. It is often described as the southernmost town in Germany. From above, the town spreads across the flat valley floor in a mix of old streets and newer districts, with meadows filling the gaps and mountains rising on all sides.
The Grünten, a prominent mountain nicknamed the guardian of the Allgäu, stands to the northeast, and the Allgäu Alps begin just to the south towards Oberstdorf. The Iller and the railway run through the valley alongside the town, and the main road threads between them.
A Sonthofen map poster balances valley and mountain. The streets concentrate on the level ground, while the edges of the map fill with slopes, forest roads and alpine pastures. In black and white, the river channels and the curving mountain roads give the print a clear, natural structure.

The Ostrach flows in from the east to meet the Iller near town, adding a second water line and defining the eastern side of the map.

Around the town, forest tracks and roads wind up the slopes towards the Grünten and the Allgäu Alps, turning the outer poster into mountain country.
