Sonthofen lies in the Oberallgäu district of Bavaria, in the wide valley of the Iller, where the Ostrach joins it from the east. It is often described as the southernmost town in Germany. From above, the town spreads across the flat valley floor in a mix of old streets and newer districts, with meadows filling the gaps and mountains rising on all sides.
The Grünten, a prominent mountain nicknamed the guardian of the Allgäu, stands to the northeast, and the Allgäu Alps begin just to the south towards Oberstdorf. The Iller and the railway run through the valley alongside the town, and the main road threads between them.
