Speyer lies on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, and from above its old centre is unusually easy to read. Maximilianstraße runs as a broad straight axis from the Altpörtel, the medieval town gate, east to the cathedral, which stands close to the river on its own green ground. The Speyerbach stream winds through the town before joining the Rhine.
The Romanesque Imperial Cathedral, where several Salian emperors are buried, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the medieval Jewish courtyard with its ritual bath belongs to the ShUM sites listed in 2021. South of the centre, the Technik Museum occupies a large site that shows up clearly as a block of open ground.

The cathedral and its park sit at the eastern end of the old town near the river, a large open space that gives the centre a strong focal point.

East of the town the Rhine bends through old channels, lakes and woodland. These water shapes add soft, irregular forms next to the town's orderly streets.
