Totton lies in Hampshire at the western edge of Southampton, close to where the River Test widens into its estuary at the head of Southampton Water. The water frames the map on the east, with channels, mudflats and marshes softening the shoreline. Roads and a railway cross the estuary at Redbridge, linking Totton to the city.
Neighbouring Eling, at the edge of the estuary, is home to one of the few working tide mills in the country, where the tide itself has been used to turn the wheel. To the west, Totton gives way to the edge of the New Forest, and the map changes from dense housing to heath, woodland and quiet lanes.
