Wucheng lies in the south of Anhui province, in the hilly country of the historic Huizhou region, not far from the Huangshan range. The landscape here is shaped by narrow valleys and forested ridges, and settlements tend to follow the level ground along rivers. From above, Wucheng reads as a compact built area pressed between the slopes.
Huizhou is known for its whitewashed houses with dark tiled roofs and stepped gable walls, a building style that still defines many towns and villages in the area.
