Chizhou lies on the south bank of the Yangtze in southern Anhui. On a map, the river runs along the northern side of the city, broad and slow, with sandbars and branches that change the width of the water. Between the river and the urban area, lakes and wetlands spread across the low ground, giving the map a lot of open water.
The city itself is not large, and its streets form a modest grid, with newer districts extending toward the lakes. Beyond the urban area, the land rises toward hills and mountains in the south, and rivers wind down from them to join the Yangtze.
Chizhou's best-known feature is Mount Jiuhua, one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, which lies within the prefecture to the southeast.
