The oldest part of Hefei is easy to find on a map. The line of the former city walls has become Huancheng Park, a green belt that encircles the historic centre, interrupted only where roads cross it. Inside, the blocks are small and irregular; outside, the city opens into wide avenues and large planned districts reaching in every direction.
To the south, Hefei stretches toward Chaohu Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China, and the Binhu area has been built up along its northern shore. The Nanfei River winds through the city toward the lake, linking the old centre with the water. A Hefei map poster shows that orientation clearly: the old ring to the north, the great lake below.
Hefei is the capital of Anhui and the home town of Bao Zheng, the Song dynasty official remembered in Chinese culture as a model of fair judgement; a park and memorial to him lie within the green belt. The city is also known for the University of Science and Technology of China and its research institutes, which have shaped several of its newer districts.
