Lu’an is a prefecture-level city in the west of Anhui province, and its map sits where one landscape turns into another. To the north and east lies the flat land between the Yangtze and Huai rivers, crossed by rivers and canals. To the south and west rise the Dabie Mountains, whose foothills and reservoirs shape much of the wider prefecture.
The Pi River runs past the city, and the urban area has grown along it, with the older centre near the water and newer districts in broader, more regular blocks. Channels of the large Pishihang irrigation system cross the surrounding farmland in long lines. Major roads lead east toward Hefei, the provincial capital.
The region is known across China for Lu’an Guapian, a green tea grown in the hills to the south and west. A Lu’an map poster shows the city where river, plain and mountains meet. The flowing line of the Pi contrasts with the straight roads and channels of the countryside.

Canals of the Pishihang system, one of the largest irrigation networks in China, cross the plain around the city in long, gentle lines between fields and villages.
Toward the hills
South and west of the city the land rises into the Dabie foothills. Here the map grows quieter, with roads following the valleys instead of a grid.
