Anqing lies on the north bank of the Yangtze River in southwestern Anhui, and for a long period it was the capital of the province. The river runs broad along the city's southern edge. The older districts sit close to the water, with streets running back from the waterfront in a compact pattern.
At the river's edge stands the Zhenfeng Pagoda of Yingjiang Temple, a landmark long tied to the view of the city from the water. Behind the centre, lakes and ponds open up between the neighbourhoods, while newer districts extend north and east with broader avenues. Bridges carry road and rail across the Yangtze to the south bank.
Anqing is also the home of Huangmei opera, one of China's best known forms of regional theatre. An Anqing map poster shows a traditional river port in plan. It has the long curve of the Yangtze, a dense older core, lakes in the middle distance and modern streets unfolding across the plain further inland.
