Akhtubinsk lies in Astrakhan Oblast in southern Russia, on the Akhtuba River, a long branch of the Volga. From above, the town sits between two very different landscapes: to the west, the green Volga-Akhtuba floodplain with its web of channels and lakes, and to the east, the dry, open steppe.
The town is known in Russia as the home of a major state flight test centre, where military aircraft have been tested for decades. Its airfield takes up a large area on the map. Rail lines and roads cross the region, linking Akhtubinsk with Volgograd to the north and Astrakhan to the south.
