Azhatebage Map Poster
Azhatebage lies on the irrigated plain of the western Tarim Basin, south of Kashgar. On a map, the pattern is set by water more than by streets. Straight canals and farm roads divide the land into long rectangular plots. Houses line these routes, and the village centre is simply the place where several of the lines meet.
This part of Xinjiang depends on meltwater from the mountains to the south and west. Irrigation turns dry ground into a patchwork of orchards and fields. Beyond the cultivated land the ground opens into arid country, and the difference between farmed and unfarmed land is often sharp. That makes oasis towns like this one very clear when seen from above.
