Forbach sits in the Moselle department in northeastern France, right on the German border, a few kilometres from Saarbrücken. From above, the town spreads along a valley at the foot of wooded hills, and its streets wind up the slopes. The border runs close to the town's edge, and the built-up area continues almost without a break into Germany.
Rising above the centre is the Schlossberg, a wooded hill with the remains of a medieval castle and its tower. On the map it is an open, rounded space beside the dense streets. Around the town, housing estates, former industrial land and railway lines show the mark of the region's coal-mining past, alongside forests and green corridors.
Forbach grew as part of the Lorraine coalfield, and the heritage of mining still shapes the surrounding towns and landscape.
