La Ceja lies on the high plateau of eastern Antioquia, more than two thousand metres above sea level, in the valley region known locally as the Valle de San Nicolás. The town centre follows the classic Spanish colonial grid around a main square. Around it, newer neighbourhoods and country houses spread across the gently rolling land.
The area is known for its flower growing. Greenhouses around La Ceja produce flowers for export, and on satellite imagery they appear as pale rectangles scattered across the fields. The cool climate and closeness to Medellín have also made the town a popular place for weekend homes. In recent decades the edges of town have grown gradually as a result.
