Mārkāpur lies in Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, in dry, open country west of the coast, with the forested Nallamala hills rising further west. On the map the town appears as a compact, irregular network of streets with a railway line passing through and roads heading out across the plain toward the surrounding villages.
The town is best known for slate. Quarries in the area have supplied slate for generations, and Mārkāpur was once famous for the writing slates used by schoolchildren across India. The old Chennakesava temple, a local landmark, stands in the town and gives the older streets a clear centre.
