Valley-floor town
The built area spreads along the flat valley bottom, giving the map an elongated outline defined as much by the surrounding mountains as by the streets themselves.

关于地图
Nanjian Map Poster & Print
Nanjian is the seat of a Yi autonomous county in the Dali prefecture of western Yunnan, a region of high ridges and deep river valleys. The town occupies level ground in a valley, and that setting shapes everything on the map: development follows the flat land, while the mountains press in from both sides and leave their slopes as open space.
Within the valley, the street pattern mixes a denser older centre with newer, straighter roads laid out as the town has grown. Main routes run along the length of the valley, and side streets climb only as far as the terrain allows. The result is an elongated, organic shape, quite unlike the square grids of lowland Chinese cities.
A Nanjian map poster is for people from the county and its villages, travellers who have made their way through western Yunnan, and anyone drawn to towns shaped by terrain. The composition has a clear direction, a long settled valley running through the middle, with quiet margins that suggest the heights rising all around it.

Old and new streets
A tighter, older core sits beside wider, straighter roads from recent growth, and the difference in texture is easy to read in fine black lines.
Mountain margins
Steep ground around the town stays largely unbuilt, so the edges of the poster remain open and calm, hinting at the high ridges of western Yunnan.

为什么选 Nanjian
一张有意义的地图
A map of Nanjian shows how completely a landscape can decide the shape of a town. It works as a keepsake for those who left the county for Kunming or further afield, and as a quiet, elegant piece of cartography for anyone else.
You can set the title and subtitle in your own words, add a date to the coordinates line, and choose among Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Buy the HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
