Oristano Map Poster & Print
Oristano is on the central west coast of Sardinia, near the Gulf of Oristano. The land around it is almost entirely flat, and the map is dominated by water: the Tirso river passes close to the town on its way to the sea, and wide coastal lagoons spread along the shore. The city itself sits a few kilometres inland, with the gulf filling the western side of any wide view.
The historic centre is a compact oval of narrow streets and small squares, still traceable as the area once enclosed by medieval walls. Around it, later neighbourhoods follow a more regular pattern, and main roads leave toward the coast and the rest of the island. Irrigation channels and field roads cut the surrounding plain into long, neat strips.
Oristano was the capital of the medieval Giudicato of Arborea, and it is known for the Sartiglia, an equestrian joust held during Carnival. Across the gulf, the Sinis peninsula holds the ruins of Tharros. An Oristano map poster shows a flat, watery setting and the old walled centre at its heart.
