Palenque sits in northern Chiapas, where the flat lowlands meet the first forested hills of the Sierra. From above, the modern town is a neat grid of streets and blocks on level ground, with a main road leading west toward the dense green slopes that hide the ancient site.
The ruins of Palenque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie a few kilometres outside the town. Its Temple of the Inscriptions holds the tomb of the ruler K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, one of the most celebrated finds in Maya archaeology. A Palenque map poster shows the town and the road linking it to that forest-covered city.
Beyond the grid, the map fills with the looser lines of rural roads and streams running out of the hills. The contrast between the orderly town and the rainforest beyond gives the print a clear structure, with the ancient site as a quiet focal point.
