Santa María Atzompa sits on the northwestern edge of Oaxaca de Juárez, in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. It is known across Mexico for its pottery, particularly the green-glazed ware made by local families, and for the archaeological site of Atzompa on the hill above town, a Zapotec centre closely linked to nearby Monte Albán.
On the map, Atzompa shows how a traditional village has merged with a growing city. The older centre around the church and market holds a tighter street pattern, while newer neighbourhoods spread across the lower slopes in blocks that meet the Oaxaca urban area. Toward the hills, streets thin out and give way to open ground where the archaeological zone sits above the settlement.
