Suizhou lies in northern Hubei, in the corridor between the Tongbai and Dahong mountains. On a map, the city's built-up area follows the rivers that cross the valley, with streets gathering along the banks and spreading out onto the lower ground. Hills rise at the edges of the frame, and farmland fills the flatter areas beyond the city.
The area is best known for the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, found near the city in 1978. It held a remarkable set of bronze chime bells, over two thousand years old, now kept in the Hubei Provincial Museum. Suizhou also associates itself with the legendary Emperor Yan, and holds ceremonies in his honour.
The urban pattern mixes an older, tighter core with newer districts laid out on a more regular plan. Main roads and rail lines follow the valley, linking the city with Wuhan to the southeast and the north of the province.
