Vilassar de Mar lies on the Maresme coast north of Barcelona, where a narrow strip of flat land runs between the sea and the coastal hills. From above, the town is a long band. The beach and the railway line trace its seaward edge, a coastal road runs parallel, and the streets climb inland in a tight grid toward the slopes.
The railway along this shore follows the route of Spain's first railway line, opened in 1848 between Barcelona and Mataró. The town has a strong seafaring past, remembered in its maritime museum, and it was long known for flower growing, with greenhouses and nurseries once common in the area.
A Vilassar de Mar map poster is shaped by the clean line of the coast. The Mediterranean fills one side of the frame, and the town's streets run neatly away from the shore. The result is a graphic, balanced print that works particularly well in the darker styles.
