Wenfeng lies in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and rivers that eventually drain toward the Yangtze and the Three Gorges. The land is rugged and there is little flat ground, so the town has grown wherever the valley allows, and its outline follows the shape of the terrain.
On a map this makes for an unusual composition. The streets and buildings gather tightly along the valley bottom and the lower slopes, while the roads out of town twist through the mountains in long switchbacks. A Wenfeng map poster shows how the settlement is fitted into a landscape that allows very little room.
In black and white, the steep hills appear mostly as empty space around the town, and the winding roads and river lines make fluid shapes across it. The dense centre and the loose, curving lines around it give the map a sense of movement that suits this mountainous corner of China.
