Yajalón sits in the northern highlands of Chiapas. From above, the town fills a valley floor and climbs a little up the surrounding slopes. The central streets form a small grid, which gives way to roads that bend with the terrain as they leave town and climb into the mountains.
The area is known for coffee, and the surrounding hills are planted with it alongside forest. The municipality is home to Indigenous communities, including Tzeltal speakers, and the town serves as a market centre for the smaller settlements scattered through the mountains around it.
A Yajalón map poster shows how the landscape confines a town. The central grid is tidy, but it has nowhere to spread, so the edges fray into winding roads and scattered buildings. The result is compact and full of tension, a small town defined by the hills around it.
