Ārt Khwājah is a town in Takhar province in northern Afghanistan, close to the border with Tajikistan. The surrounding land is a broad plain, and water brought from the rivers of the region turns it into farmland. On a map, it is the irrigation that gives the landscape its structure.
The town itself is a compact cluster of lanes and walled compounds. Around it, canals and field boundaries divide the land into a patchwork, and village roads link one settlement to the next. Further away, the ground rises into dry hills with almost no lines at all.
