Bahārak lies east of Fayzabad in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, in a broad valley surrounded by steep mountains. It sits where river valleys come together, and that position has long made it a crossing point for routes heading deeper into the Hindu Kush and toward the Wakhan.
The flat valley floor holds the town and its fields. From above, the settlement looks like a scatter of compounds and lanes among irrigated plots, with roads following the rivers out of the basin. Past the cultivated ground the map turns abruptly to mountain slopes, where few lines can be drawn.
