Çan lies inland in Çanakkale province in northwestern Turkey, away from the Dardanelles and the Aegean coast. The town sits in a valley surrounded by wooded hills, and from above its streets follow the lie of the land, with the centre concentrated on flatter ground and newer neighbourhoods climbing the slopes around it.
The town is closely associated with industry. Lignite has long been mined in the area and supports a power station nearby, and Çan is known across Turkey as a centre of ceramic tile production.
